Malaysia – 1Q 2018 Balance Of Payments

In 1Q 2018, the current account surplus expanded on a quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year basis. As a percentage of GDP, the current account surplus rose to 4.4% – see figure 1. On the other hand, the financial account recorded a net inflow mainly due to an increase in direct investment – see table 1. However, the overall balance of payments registered a deficit of RM18.2 bln.


The deficit in the services account narrowed in 1Q 2018, due mainly to smaller deficits in the transportation, construction, and insurance and pension segments, as well as charges for the use of intellectual property – see table 2.
