The headline consumer price index (CPI) in May rose 0.2% from the previous month. Excluding the food and energy components, the core CPI also increased by 0.2% – see table 1. Year-on-year, the headline CPI rose by 2.8% (its highest level since Feb 2012), while the core CPI rose by 2.2% – see figure 1. The increase in the core CPI mainly reflects higher prices in the services segment. Commodity prices at the consumer level have been in deflationary territory for the past five years, albeit improving.
