Japan – Jun Housing Starts

Housing starts in Jun dropped 12.8% year-on-year, to 71,101 units – see figure 1. As shown in table 1, the decline was due to a broad-based contraction in all the major categories of housing starts. Even without Covid-19, the prospects of Japan’s housing sector are bleak due to a high vacancy rate and a shrinking population.
