Hong Kong – Mar Retail Sales

In Mar 2021, retail sales surged 20.1% from a low base a year ago (figure 1). All types of retail categories, except for supermarkets & food, alcoholic drinks and tobacco, sustained an expansion in sales. In Jan to Mar 2021, retail sales increased by 7.5% compared with a year ago. However, retail sales are expected to be weak in the near term due to the ailing local economy and absence of tourist spending.

In the meantime, as expected, it is MCO 3.0 for KL and certain places in Selangor. This is the result of the lack of discipline amongst Malaysians, the lax enforcement by the authorities and lethargy to the pandemic by the Malaysian government. As amply demonstrated in countries which are still struggling to contain the SARS-CoV-2, there is simply no easy way out of the situation - the government need to consistently take tough and unpopular steps and the ordinary people need to be extremely responsible in their actions. The longer all parties avoid to do the right things, the greater and the longer the sufferings will be for all.
