Last week, Bank Negara Malaysia released its 2023 annual report. Although the economy has normalised from the Covid-19 pandemic, not everything has returned to normal. In one of the feature article, it was revealed that the median wage of fresh graduates in 2022 was RM1,624, only slightly higher than the minimum wage, and was still lower than the RM2,066 registered in 2019. One of the reasons graduates in Malaysia earn such low wages is because there are not sufficient high-skilled and high-paying jobs created in the country. Between 2018 and 2019, the number of new graduates entering the labour force was about twice the increase in the number of high-skilled jobs. The gap has widened post-pandemic. However, the problem does not only lie there because a large number in the existing pool of Malaysian graduates does not have the necessary skills to take on the available high-skilled jobs. How to create more high-skilled and high-paying jobs ? Malaysian graduates are inadequate not only in technical skills, they are also severely lacking in interpersonal and communication skills. Malaysia’s education system and the parents’ mindset clearly need an overhaul.
