At the end of 2025, China's population totalled 1.405 bln, 3.39 mln fewer than a year ago. This is the 4th consecutive year that the country's population has shrank as her death rate has outpaced that of her birth rate since 2022. Although China still boasts a large 968.5 mln working age population, the declining trend is a concern as it poses very long-term challenges to the country's economic growth, as well as its healthcare and pension systems.
