On 30 Apr 2026, former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered an address on international relations and his assessment of the Trump administration's policies at the Harvard Kennedy School's Institute of Politics. After that, he was joined by Daniel Ziblatt, the Eaton professor of science and government at Harvard for a discussion, during which he said "China is, as the US and Germany in the 19th century, an engineers' country. And now we are lawyers' countries". He further commented "We cannot explain to our people why other countries can build a national railway system in 20 years while we cannot build a commuter line in 20 years."
Note from Publisher
The Malaysian government has long encouraged citizens to use public transportation as a means of alleviating the country’s worsening traffic congestion. However, these efforts have yielded limited success. Despite the recent increase in fuel prices triggered by the US-Israel-Iran conflict, government data indicates that petrol consumption has continued to rise slightly.
There are many reasons why Malaysians remain reluctant to switch to public transport, one of which is the inadequacy of the country’s public transportation system.
For those who commute to work in the Klang Valley using public transport, the LRT and MRT systems are the primary options. However, both rail networks have experienced recurring technical problems, resulting in service delays and disruptions. More recently, an LRT train derailment raised concerns about passenger safety. While affordability is an important consideration, reliability, convenience, and safety are equally critical factors influencing commuters’ transportation choices. If these conditions are not met, many people will continue to prefer private vehicles over public transport.
To successfully encourage greater public transport usage, it is not enough merely to build infrastructure. The system must also be reliable, safe, convenient, and user-friendly. Public transportation should offer a seamless and dependable commuting experience that meets the needs of daily users. Without this complete package, government campaigns promoting public transport are unlikely to achieve their intended objectives
