This week, i Capital provides an update on Kelington Group Berhad (Kelington), a leading integrated engineering solutions provider listed on Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad since 2009. Founded in 1999 by Ir. Gan Hung Keng, a chemical and process engineer with extensive experience in semiconductor gas systems, Kelington has evolved from a specialist in ultra-high purity (UHP) gas systems into an integrated engineering and industrial gases group. Today, Kelington serves a diverse range of industries, including semiconductors, electronics, oil & gas, oleochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, biotechnology, and healthcare, its operations spanning Malaysia, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Germany, India, and the Philippines.

Q1 FY2026 Financial Performance

Kelington delivered a solid set of results for the first quarter ended 31 March 2026. Revenue remained broadly stable at RM 270.4 mln (+0.1% year-on-year), reflecting management's deliberate prioritisation of profitability over revenue growth. However, said results should be considered alongside the fact that Q1 is historically Kelington's weakest quarter due to its festive holidays and shorter working period.

The Malaysian government has long encouraged citizens to use public transportation as a means of alleviating the country’s worsening traffic congestion. However, these efforts have yielded limited success. Despite the recent increase in fuel prices triggered by the US-Israel-Iran conflict, government data indicates that petrol consumption has continued to rise slightly.

There are many reasons why Malaysians remain reluctant to switch to public transport, one of which is the inadequacy of the country’s public transportation system.

For those who commute to work in the Klang Valley using public transport, the LRT and MRT systems are the primary options. However, both rail networks have experienced recurring technical problems, resulting in service delays and disruptions. More recently, an LRT train derailment raised concerns about passenger safety. While affordability is an important consideration, reliability, convenience, and safety are equally critical factors influencing commuters’ transportation choices. If these conditions are not met, many people will continue to prefer private vehicles over public transport.

To successfully encourage greater public transport usage, it is not enough merely to build infrastructure. The system must also be reliable, safe, convenient, and user-friendly. Public transportation should offer a seamless and dependable commuting experience that meets the needs of daily users. Without this complete package, government campaigns promoting public transport are unlikely to achieve their intended objectives
