On a year-on-year basis, total exports in Jun 2026 expanded by 53.4% to HK$641.1 bln, marking the highest growth rate since Mar 1984. Meanwhile, total imports surged by 45.4% to HK$693.0 bln, the highest growth rate since Feb 1992. This resulted in a trade deficit of HK$52.0 bln (figure 1).
The continued robust global demand for AI-related electronic products, such as electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances, as well as telecommunication equipment, continued to support export and import growth.
By country, the increase in exports was mainly driven by stronger demand from Singapore, Taiwan, Mainland China, Vietnam, Thailand, the US, and Mexico. Meanwhile, Korea, Vietnam, India, Malaysia, and Mainland China were the major sources of imports in Jun.

Note from Publisher
The scenes at Dataran Merdeka after the 2026 World Cup final were deeply disappointing. Thousands gathered for football’s biggest occasion, yet many left behind piles of rubbish that turned one of Malaysia’s most historic public spaces into a litter-strewn mess. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident. Similar scenes have followed festive gatherings, concerts and public celebrations over the years, pointing to a persistent weakness in our civic culture.
A clean city is not maintained solely by municipal workers. It depends on citizens and residents who understand that public spaces belong to everyone. Picking up one’s own rubbish is not an act of charity; it is a basic responsibility. When people expect others to clean up after them, they reveal a troubling lack of respect for fellow citizens and residents and for the nation itself.
Improving civic-mindedness requires more than stricter enforcement, although fines should be imposed on blatant offenders. Schools, families and community organisations must also play a stronger role in instilling habits of responsibility, respect and consideration for others from a young age. Public campaigns should reinforce that patriotism is demonstrated not only by waving the national flag but also by caring for the country’s shared spaces.
National pride is measured by our everyday actions. If Malaysians aspire to build a progressive, respected nation, cleaning up after ourselves is one of the simplest acts to start.
