This week, i Capital features Pekat Group Berhad (Pekat), a leading provider of solar energy, earthing, and lightning protection services operating in Malaysia’s renewable energy space. Pekat’s origins can be traced back to 1999, when Pekat Teknologi was founded as a distributor of surge protection devices by Chin Soo Mau, Koh Heng Ken, and Lim Mee Choo. Years later, Pekat’s distribution business evolved when it secured authorised distributorship for Furse ELP products in Malaysia and subsequently launched its own Pekat brand in 2008. Driven by a desire to establish a presence in renewable energy, Pekat ventured into the design, supply, and installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in 2010. In 2012, Pekat restructured to focus its operations on three core business activities: Solar, Earthing & Lightning Protection, and Trading. Pekat was listed on Bursa Malaysia in 2021, its market capitalization now exceeding RM700 mln.
Solar Division
Pekat’s Solar Division focuses on the design, supply, and installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and power plants, serving both on-grid and off-grid applications across Malaysia. Off-grid solar PV systems function independently of the utility grid, often incorporating energy storage solutions like batteries to ensure consistent power supply during periods of low sunlight. In contrast, on-grid systems connect directly to the utility grid, enabling the export of surplus power or the import of additional power as required.
Pekat also provides hybrid systems that combine solar PV generation with alternative sources, such as diesel generators, for greater reliability. When contracted, the division oversees the entire project lifecycle, from system design, testing, and commissioning to operations and maintenance (O&M), guaranteeing seamless execution. To manage tasks like site preparation, earthworks, installation, and grid interconnection, Pekat collaborates with subcontractors while maintaining rigorous oversight to uphold quality and compliance standards.
In 4QFY24, the solar division's revenue rose by a significant RM16 mln (41.40%), reac
